Calculate the weight of a batch from volume, species and moisture — for example, to check whether it fits the payload of a container or truck.
Kiln-dried — up to 12%, air-dried — 15–20%, green wood — 30% and above.
Density = density at 12% × (100 + moisture) ÷ 112
Weight = volume × density
Densities at 12% moisture are taken from the catalog. As moisture rises, the weight grows by the weight of water; shrinkage and swelling are not counted, so the result is an estimate.
| Species | At 12% | At 20% | At 50% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pine | 520 | 557 | 696 |
| Spruce | 450 | 482 | 603 |
| Alder | 490 | 525 | 656 |
| Birch | 650 | 696 | 871 |
| Oak | 700 | 750 | 938 |
Approximate values, kg per 1 m³ at the given moisture.
About 520 kg at 12% moisture (kiln-dried). Green wood is noticeably heavier — see the calculator and the table above for exact figures.
Water adds weight: raising moisture from 12% to 20% makes a cubic metre about 7% heavier. The calculation is approximate — the size of a board also changes as it dries or absorbs water, and we do not account for that.
The payload of a container or truck is limited. Heavy lumber — wet or dense, like oak — hits it before the space runs out. Check the load in the container calculator.
